Hummingbirds

Hummingbirds, or “hummers” as they are often known, are the smallest of all birds. Solely inhabiting the New World, they are very tiny and have incredible flight powers and brilliant, iridescent colors. These characteristics make field identification problematic, but hummers are readily attracted to sugar-water feeders, where they can be studied.

Auks, Murres, and Puffins

Spectacular and with many species easily observed at their remote breeding colonies, alcids pose a challenge to scrutinize and identify at sea, where they spend most of their time—much of it submerged. A typical birder’s view is of distant birds in flight, often in rough sea condition.
